The Joseph E. and Marjorie B. Jones Foundation has been helping Washington D.C. area organizations and residents since 1992. As outlined in our Mission Statement, The Jones Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people, particularly those residing in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, by funding non-profit institutions that support medical research, human services, health care initiatives and education. Our annual grant budget began with just $14,000 and has grown steadily since the early 1990s, with roughly 40 organizations receiving varying amounts of financial aid.
Civic Cooperation
One such project we have funded is the Downtown Cluster of Congregations-a 43-member consortium of religious congregations that offer programs for the needy, particularly the young, elderly, poor and homeless. The goal of the Downtown Cluster is to break the cycle of poverty in Washington DC . It engages the business community, government and civic groups to partner in improving safety, medical and counseling services, jobs and education. The Cluster's staff is both multicultural and bilingual.
Activities for Children
Another past recipient of a Jones Foundation grant is the Friends of Fort DuPont Ice Arena. This non-profit group formed to manage and revitalize the ice arena, in SE Washington D.C., which serves lower income communities and strives to provide increased opportunity, education and inspiration through ice skating and related activities. The Friends of Fort DuPont Ice Arena serves 10,000 youth, ages 5-18, each year.
Community Support
The CHI Centers has also benefitted from a Jones Foundation grant. The CHI Centers, based in Silver Spring , Maryland , strives to create conditions for people with disabilities to have opportunities to participate in community life and serves Montgomery, Prince George 's and Howard Counties. In past years, The Jones Foundation has helped to fund two passenger vans for the Centers so participants could enjoy field trips, community volunteer opportunities and seasonal evening activities. Our grant was also used to expand their existing computer lab by updating the hardware and software to meet the needs of the disabled individuals they serve.
These organizations are just a small example of The Jones Foundation's awardees. Our recipients are dedicated and varied and each year we award grants to vital and vibrant organizations that make an enormous difference to others.
